St. Andrew's Lutheran Church
Pentecost Season
The Greek word “pentecost” means “fiftieth” and refers to the fiftieth day after Passover. The Christian feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and followers, as they were gathering for the Ancient Jewish tradition of “Shavuot” which celebrates the giving of the Torah. The Pentecost Season signifies the continuation of the ministry of Jesus.
In 2024, the Festival of Pentecost fell on May 19. Our Lutheran worship on this day was filled with festivity, color, and movement as we both concluded the Easter celebration and welcomed anew the gift of the Holy Spirit. Many ELCA worshippers wear red on Pentecost, recalling the red of the flames of the Holy Spirit. The wind of the Holy Spirit urges us outside the walls of the church carry on the mission and ministry of Christ in the world.
