St. Andrew's Lutheran Church

Holy Week
βIn the Lutheran tradition, Holy Week commemorates the events of Jesus' last week, including his entry into Jerusalem, his Last Supper, his crucifixion, and his resurrection, through special liturgies and reflections.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, celebrating Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, often with a procession and the waving of palm branches. We begin our service in the courtyard and process around the building into the sanctuary, waving palm fronds and singing songs of praise.

Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus' last meal with his disciples and is named for his "mandate" to love one another. The liturgy includes Holy Communion at a table where all are welcome and concludes with the stripping of the altar. We depart in silence as we turn our hearts toward Good Friday.

Good Friday's evening service uses music, light, and shadows to focus our attention on Jesus' execution and burial. God’s closeness is revealed in the extreme vulnerability and injustice of Jesus' execution, and we are reminded that God is always present in our bleakest times. We know grief well and this service helps us prepare for the contrast of Easter morning.

Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus' resurrection, the central event of our Christian faith, with joyous worship and the proclamation of "He is risen!" Our joyful morning service includes readings focused on the resurrection, jubilant hymns and special music, scavenger hunts for kids and adults, and a delicious community meal.
Join us for some or all of this week as we remember Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, and
reflect on his call to love and serve others.
